Fridley math team excels in recent tournaments

The Fridley High School math team has been excelling this season, earning first place in its division at a meet held at Mound Westonka High School on November 26, 2018. The team competed against six schools in the Metro Alliance division which includes St. Anthony Village, Mound Westonka High School, Orono High School, Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School, Providence Academy, and Columbia Heights High School. The team finished with 56 points and scored significantly higher than competing schools with the closest team finishing with 42 points.

The Fridley High School team earned second place at a tournament held at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School on December 17, 2018. A close finish, Fridley High School earned 45 points and placed just under St. Anthony Village who finished in first place with 47 points.

Students are scored on an individual and team basis in events that include algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and more. Fridley High School senior Nathan Ramirez has had an exceptional performance this season, often earning the highest score in the Metro Alliance division. Additionally, several Fridley High School students have also been performing well, including: Andy Ramirez (Gr. 9), Joseph Blegen (Gr. 12), and Akshay Rai (Gr. 9).

The Minnesota State High School Mathematics League season consists of five statewide tournaments per year from November through February, as well as a state tournament held in March. The next tournament will be held on January 28, 2019.
