The Fridley Youth In Government (YIG) delegation hosted a statewide training event on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Fridley High School to prepare for the upcoming state legislative simulation, the Model Assembly. Operated by the Minnesota YMCA, YIG is an experiential learning program for middle school and high school students, and teaches students about how state and world government function through an interactive and realistic simulation. The program features two large annual events: Model Assembly, which simulates a state government legislative session and occurs in January; and Model United Nations, a simulation of students representing different countries to solve global problems that takes place in March.

Over 1,000 YIG students from around the state attended the event, called LAUNCH, at Fridley High School. The day-long training session allowed students to prepare for their program areas at the Model Assembly in January. Program areas include: Leadership Corps, Legislatures, Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Trial Court and District Court, National Issues Forum, Media, Lobbyists, and Executive Branch.

According to advisor and FHS history teacher Steve Holt, YIG is a valuable experiential learning opportunity, teaching students through interactive, hands-on experiences in the roles of all parts of government. “This is not a traditional academic exercise, but a simulation that truly mirrors our democratic processes,” said Holt. “Students who participate in YIG are not only more likely to vote, but they are more likely to actively participate in government.”

Holt added that YIG offers benefits beyond an education in government. “By participating in YIG, our students greatly benefit from learning responsibility, leadership, self-confidence, and public speaking skills.”

Congratulations to Fridley High School senior Adam Johnson who was selected to be a member of the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band (MYJB)! MYJB consists of three highly-competitive student jazz ensembles. Auditions are open to students from across the Twin Cities metro area, and the musicians who are selected into the ensembles are some of the best jazz students in the state.

MYJB ensembles typically meet once or twice a week, rehearsing with some of Minnesota’s best jazz educators.  Students learn challenging music and work on musical style, history, and improvisation in further depth, compared to standard school jazz bands.  Each ensemble performs several concerts throughout the year, and even record a professional CD. 

Adam is a senior tenor saxophone player, and was one of 44 such players who auditioned this year for the group. Only eight tenor sax players from the state were selected. Adam was also a member of the North Metro Honor Jazz Band program in 2018, which is an affiliate of MYJB.

Fridley Preschool 4-year-old students toured the Fridley Civic Campus on October 25, 2019. Students had the opportunity to meet Mayor Scott Lund and explore the council chambers, sitting in the chairs of City Council members. The preschool classes also visited the Police and Fire Departments to meet staff, sit in emergency vehicles, and wander through the firefighters’ living quarters. In addition, students walked through the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, Planning and Zoning, and Finance areas, and observed crossing and stop signs being made at the Public Works Department.

Fridley Preschool incorporates the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework into its curriculum. The PYP is guided by six transdisciplinary themes: Who We Are, How We Express Ourselves, How The World Works, Where We Are In Place And Time, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing The Planet. Preschool teacher Jaime Finch said the Civic Campus field trip fit well into the International Baccalaureate (IB) theme of “Who We Are.”

“The central idea of ‘Who We Are,’ is, ‘As people grow older they change and learn how to do new things,’” said Finch. “As a class, we discussed how adults have jobs that they want and learn to do. We saw a variety of different jobs being performed by numerous adults and we discussed how all our students will choose a job when they are adults. Some of our students said that they wanted to be police officers, firefighters, and drive trucks just like the adults we visited at the Fridley Civic Center!”
